I have a bed liner on my p/u onto which I want to mount a 5er hitch. Should the liner be removed, cut or shimmed. There have been warnings that the hitch should be mounted in metal contact with the box.Is this a law or just common sense?

I have the hitch mounted on a spray on liner with no problem (about 7 yrs). I have seen a plastic liner that was cut out for the hitch. I don't know how it would work on top of it.

It is good common sense and good mechanical practice. The load and movement will wear away the plastic and you could end up with a looser attachment. And then again, you could be lucky. To be on the safe side, I would cut it out as Ed mentioned.

I have a pullright hitch. On another pickup I had the the bedliner cut to install the hitch. I will never have it done again. First of all the air gets under the liner where it has been cut,also dirt, leaves, etc. This time I cut steel smooth rods the width of the mounting plates and placed them in the liner in the grooves every other one. To allow water, and dirt to escape. Besure steel rods are large enough to raised plates just above liner so it just touches the liner after tighting bolts. Works great! four years now. Pulling 12,000 lbs dry.

Just last instaled a Reese Slider in my GMC and was told Steel to Steel, I cut 2 slots for the rails!!

I installed a 5th wheel hitch on my drop in bed liner. To give it a solid footing, I placed a couple of pieces of rebar in the slots. They and it fit perfectly. No need to cut anything.

we cut ours, if you ever trade trucks keep your liner the slots will line up for your 5er hitch,
we all so put drain holes in the bed never seen any leaves ----------
