Assuming one has a laptop already what are the advantages to a stand alone GPS unit ($600+) over those $100 units that hook to the laptop ?

Get the Delorme Earthmate GPS 2005, beings you have a laptop. You will have larger screen etc. Also Delorme has more features than the GPS only units that I tried. It took a little while to learn it but after learning it, had more featurews than I expected. I paid $129.00 for it.
Good luck.

I purchased Microsoft's Streets and Trips program with GPS from Amazon.com for around $100 and it works fine. Instructions were a little sparse, but after playing with it for a few days I got it figured out. Dean

Can't think of any reason why stand alone units are better IF size isn't an issue.
Had been a long time user of Delorme products and a few months back bought SA 2005 with the earthmate GPS ($79). Like the GPS but do NOT like the software. Way TOO many errors in the software and don't like the interface of the SW.
Two weeks ago I bought a copy of Streets & Trips ($15 after rebate). The software is better by a mile IMO. Have not used the GPS with this SW as yet.
Have found SA had at least a doz errors in Exit Services at nearby freeway exit. Found old well established road (hwy 99E) mislocated and SW keep trying to reroute where roads did not exist. In another locale SA couldn't locate an establishment and the address specified was mislocated by about a mile to where no road existed when the actual road was shown on the map.
Do NOT recommend SA but earthmate seems good from little use I've put it to.

Delorme does not seem to have updated their software since at least 1998. Found same errors in 2004 version as SA9. Typical American Scammers!

Have a Magellan 315 GPS unit connected to my laptop with Streets & Trips. Great combination and works fault free.
