I'm shopping for my first RV and can't afford a diesel, which I prefer. My next choice would be the Ford Triton V10. However, I've heard bad and good comments. Those making the bad comments say something like " hell, they ain't no good." When pressed they reply, "I don't really know whats bad about them, I just heard they ain't no good." Those saying the engine is good, usually say, "it's a great engine", and have never had any problems. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

Sammy_3,
Right now I'm at the data gathering stage and hope to be able to get it settled before we get disabled. I spoke briefly with a Ford tech on the way out of a campground and he talked about a sticky governor, accessible by removing the tailshaft housing. Thought it could be cleaned.
Just over 50,000 miles, no rebuild prior, fluid changed once. 97 AStar 4.0 RWD with trailer package, trans is 5R55E. From what I've seen, trans also used in Explorer, Ranger and SporTrac with 4.0L.
THANKS for stepping in on this! God Bless, jd

JD, I spoke with my trans tech and he said there are a few things that could be the problem. 1. the servo piston could be sticking or is stuck. 2. The intermediate band could be bad and is causing the delayed shift. He also seems to think your trans isn't shifting into 2nd. He said it's possibly missing 2nd and going into 3rd which would make you think there is a long 1-2 shift. If it's the servo piston, it can be fixed without removing the trans but you will need to remove the exhaust to gain clear access. He also said it could be a bit difficult replacing the piston without using special tools but it can be done. If the intermediate band is the problem, then you will probably need the trans rebuilt. My trans tech (Charles) has many years experience repairing Ford transmissions. He's been doing it since 1975 and I have complete trust in his advice. I hope this helps!

Sammy_3, I think we're closing in on what to do. We can count four shifts, then a converter lockup. Understanding that a modern AT is a very complex device, and computer controlled to boot, it seems like something is sticking or not providing timely information to/from computer and transmission. So far, I'm working on several approaches: Study the Servo issue (need a manual, any suggestions on a good one?), See a reputable trans shop (just got a solid reference on one), Look for rebuilt/exchange ATs (eBay etc, have seen a number of possibilities), Investigate getting a kit and rebuilding it (doubtful but not eliminated). News as it develops! Thanks again and God Bless,jd

Before spending a heap-o-money, pour in a can of Trans-X. It's cheap, so you're out $7 bucks if it doesn't work. Let me know how it turns out.

speaking from 'fleet service manager' experience the biggest care you can give fuel injected motors is to replace the $40 ?? in line fuel filter [soup can size] about every 20,000 miles. this improves performance and saves working the 'tiny' in tank pump too hard. if you need your pump replaced do the filter at the same time. try to run full tanks as the gas helps cool the pump

I decided to go with the 6.0 diesel.
I get 16-20 mpg pulling a 28' Outback.

The V-10 will give you 8-12 tops.

We have the Ford V 10 in our 2000 Georgie Boy Class A We bought new, and one of the mechanic's walked over to my husband and said that's a good engine..got plenty of spunk..don't be afraid to stomp on it, when you need exra power it's there and we noticed no problem passing other MH's or 18 wheelers even on hills, now we tow a rather heavy car on a tow dolly we can feel it back there at times but...still no problems, runs great!

We have had a 460 and the V-10 and I prefer the V-10 in a major way. More power, smoother, and runs like a dream. We had no problems with either engine and I am not a Ford guy either. I see no problems with the engine.

I was wondering if any one has changed their fuel filter on the V10? I am wanting to know if there is a speical tool required and what fuse to pull to relieve the pressure.

To whom it may concern, I am looking to get a 1999 F550 With a Triton V10. The only problem is the guy tells me there is a lower engine knock at higher RPM's. He said it runs but when driving 55 its pretty loud should I go buy the truck for 8999.00
Could you contact me at kilgorelovejesus@yahoo.com or 513-374-6114 I think its a great deal but need some advise as to the possible fix for this problem. Thanks Rob. 9/5/2005

Robert,

Here's the same advice I give to everyone buying a motorhome (and it holds true for the truck you're looking at).

Take it to an authorized service center and have it checked out before you buy it.

Spending a hundred or so bucks could potentially save you thousands.

Wehad a newmar dutch star with a triton v10. As wwe were leaveing the Tx rest area just got up the the interstate and there was a big boom. Thought it blew a tire but did not feel anything on the steering wheel. Instead it blew a spark plug. It striped the threads out of the aluminon head. Had to have it tow to Denison TX fors garage.Almost 2 weeks to fix it and a bill of $6866.00 Plus while it was there in a enclosed load it was vandized. Stoled the backup monitor out of it. Tried to say someone came thorugh a 20 by 24 window which we could not open all the way because it was a slide and just opened so far. Of course the extended warantee insurance Choice did not pay. So it is in arbatration now. It was a 2000 model with 22,000 miles on it. We got it fixed and traded it off.

I have heard that the earlier V-10s had problems with exhaust manifold leaks, but that it was fixed by going to a stainless steel manifold. I am looking for a V10 motorhome and need to find out when they went to the stainless steel manifolds.

I had a fuel pump go bad on my '97 motorhome with the 460 V8, Cost me 2.5 days and about $1100 during a trip. No fun. I sure wish the motorhome manufacturer had made a hatch in the floor or basement where one could extract the fuel pump. Most of my hassle was finding someone do drop a 75 gallon tank. Many said they could have done if it were the 38 gal tank on my older Class C.

I was looking at a Ford V10 motorhome and inquired about this engine on the Ford-Trucks.com site. I was told that the V10 had a problem with some engines spitting out spark plugs because of only 3 or 4 threads in head. Part was problem with torquing at factory. Also easy to cross thread. By 2003 (maybe earlier, but the poster did not know for sure) they had a new head with 7 to 8 threads. Also said a 2003 motorhome may be on a 2002 chassis.

They also said power was increased in 2000. I would post verbatim, but the site is not coming up right now. Here is the link. Maybe it will work later:
